Update on the Bell Charm Bracelet: The packaging has been sent to the printers, but the release date hasn't been updated from Mid-June 09. Let's hope we don't have to wait too much longer before we see these things around!
Nix News and updates! « Result #2 on May 24, 2009, 4:13am »
A huge pile of Nix News has accumulated while CC was away. Here is some of it. The Bells as Charm bracelets. Garth Nix has exciting plans to release charm bracelets of the seven abhorsens bells available on the dedicated online store in mid june 2009. Which means it's coming up! According to his blog: "The Abhorsen’s silver bell charms designed by Oliver Smith are slowly getting into production. The charms are cast in sterling silver (.925 silver) and ultimately will be for sale online through a dedicated website or possibly an Ebay store, and we will ship internationally. Here are a few sneak preview pics of the three varieties: bright (shiny silver); ancient (a tarnished, antique look); and black handle (for the evil necromancers). ... The bells will be packaged individually in a black velvet bag inside a round tin, stickered with the bell's name."
An insider tip from someone in jewelry says that if these are the high quality silver products they look, they will be around $200 AUD+. Something to add to the birthday list, maybe?
He also has new short stories coming out in these anthologies: "An Unwelcome Guest" in TROLLS-EYE VIEW edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling (out now) "Punctuality" in THE NEW SPACE OPERA 2 edited by Gardner Dozois and Jonathan Strahan (June 2009) "The Quiet Knight" in GEEKTASTIC edited by Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci (August 2009) "Beyond the Sea Gate of the Scholar Pirates of Sarkoe" in FAST SHIPS, BLACK SAILS edited by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer (out now) "Old Friends" in DREAMING AGAIN edited by Jack Dann (out now) "The Heart of the City" coming up sometime probably 2009 in Subterranean magazine online "Stop!" in THE DRAGON BOOK edited by Gardner Dozois and Jack Dann (out November 2009)
DESPITE the fact he has yet to release LORD SUNDAY, which has been delivered to the publishers and it set for an early 2010 release.
Bloodline: Spry's mother is a Belisaerian seamstress/lace maker. She's always been a traveller. She has no royal/clayr/wallmaker or abhorsen blood that she knows of. Spry knows of her father but has never met him. Thankfully. Training: Some military training. She can read and write. Can weave nets, ropes and, on a loom, material. She can sew, knit and crochet. She can make saddles. She can light a fire, track a deer or rabbit, split wood, cook, bank a fire, and give advanced first aid. She can identify many plants and herbs. She has rudimentary Charter knowledge. She can dance. Notably, she cannot venture beyond the second precinct in death (doesn't know the spell) and is new at bell wielding. Age at first trip into death: 8 weeks old. Story of first trip into death: Unbeknownst to her, Spry has lurked at deaths door since the first weeks of her life, when, as a colicky, sickly infant, she tripped into death several times and somehow always recovered. Her first intentional trip into death was when she was seven, and tried to run away from home into the magical place that she had always known about. Her intense fascination with death and the mysterious bond she has with it's waters are what attracted the attention of the abhorsen family to notice her. She was approached in death at 13 and began training more seriously, joining the line of three behind the abhorsen in waiting. Attitude about death/necromancers/free magic: Attitude about life/bells/charter magic: Attitude on bound creatures: Spry is very vocal about bound creatures. She believes them to be criminals of the very worst sort and treats them quite nastily even though in general the consensus is that they're already being punished. Primary Weapon: When it comes to weapons, she has a bare minimum of training. Fortunately she has the developed skill of ambidexterity, so she uses knives or daggers in both hands to make up for her lack of skill. Secondary Weapon: When desperate she fights like a wild cat, and will throw stones, bite, and scratch. Armour/Surcoat: The surcoat given to her will be pure abhorsen (she hasn't got it yet as she hasn't been to the house)
Descriptive stuff
Eyes: A somewhat bizarre dark hazel brown that almost seems yellowish. Hair: Black. Description: Spry is a tiny girl even at fifteen, and will probably continue to be tiny the rest of her life. She has long limbs and a long, graceful neck. On other teenagers a body like hers would be shy and coltish, but Spry has a strange and remarkable grace that attracts the eye and holds it. Her eyes are large and round, and framed by thick, dark lashes. She has full, shapely lips and a small, round nose. Her face is rounded and feminine with high arched eyebrows. Her skin is death pale and clear but breaks out when she doesn't wash her face for a few days. Her shiny black hair is growing out of a cute pixie cut and is boyish. Her attitude is demure but she's sharp and always watching. Clothes: Spry usually wears tank tops and long skirts. Her feet are almost always bare. When she's training she will really need a more practical attire. Fitness: Despite being small and underdeveloped, her fitness is good, and her strength is reasonable. She has perfect control over every inch of her body, which is an advantage in many circumstances.
More stuff
History: Spry never talks about her father or the circumstances of her birth, so it's become something of a fascination piece in the rich gossip of the castle. If she stopped avoiding the topic there's no doubt people would stop talking, but in the mean time the rumors going around are erratic and without even a single grain of truth. Spry and her Mother, Dalis, ignore the rumors and continue not to talk. Spry is not a social chid and even school, the years of which she and her mother could ill afford, she was quiet and worried about what people thought of her. She loves music and dance and has been dancing since she was small, somewhat accounting for the strange grace she has. When asked about her unusual and somewhat frightening connection with death, she becomes highly evasive, much the same as when the topic of her parentage comes up. She's somewhat of a mystery to the people of the palace and certainly a mystery to the abhorsen family, but it's clear her skill is second nature to her and that made her a prime candidate for abhorsen. Spry was very excited when she was put in the line, but it's been two years and she's lost hope that she'll ever be taken on. She's working hard in her mothers business, but also secretly working on some of her own projects. She's an inherently honest person and works hard to reach her goals. She's intelligent and determined but can be wistful and romantic at times. Since she's quiet, it's hard to tell what she's thinking and her outwardly reserved appearance can be mistaken for disinterest.
Anything else: Spry is going to become abhorsen in waiting after the three ahead of her died/retired with disinterest/found other jobs/whatever. It's actually really up to you what happened to them, Pro. I guess they could have retired or gotten pregnant or anything, since they knew that there was always someone else to take over from em.
