The faintest tinge of weariness seemed to crawl across his colourless eyes, though you'd be hard pressed to see it. The sheer exuberance of youth was already beginning to clamp down on his nerves. Though he knew better than to frighten Dogstar off already, the former scout would have to learn his place quickly.

"You will gain all you need when we reach our destination," Hawk answered curtly. "A necromancer has no set dress code, so you may wear what you want. The bells you do not get to breathe upon until you have sufficient knowledge of them and their purposes." He turned his head to cast a cold smile back. "It is for your own good."

Yes, because you're really concerned about what's good for me... Auralius looks concerned for a bare moment, then smiles cheerfully as he stumbles over a a bare black root. He crouches to study the plant, fascinated by the twisted, foreign foliage. He knew when he was being told off, and watched the necromancer with a certain amount of respect. Well, obviously I can't walk all over him like Captain Duskis. Works for me.

The rest of the journey was completed in silence, which he found far more preferable to the constant bombardment of questions. It was good that Dogstar was willing and eager to learn, but the boy would also have to learn to reign in his tongue, to work out when it was appropriate to speak. Ah well. It would all come in time. Patience was another trait necromancers needed to master.

Hawk eventually came to a halt, eyeing the stone wall of the mountain arching up overhead. He rested a palm on it - and a sudden flurry of strange marks skittered away along the wall, like painted figures coming to life to run away across their canvas. And then there was just no wall. Hawk stepped inside his domain, lights springing into harsh life to illuminate the cavern. Bookshelves lined the walls, each stacked with hefty books and varying implements. The floor was bare, uncovered by rug or any other homely surface, just dust and rock. A rough table and some sort of bed-like structure were tucked away in a darker corner.

"Welcome," Hawk said mildly. "To my humble abode."

Auralius's jaw drops in surprise and he bounds inside, looking around with helpless fascination.
"All these books!" he bursts out before he can stop himself "It's magnificent!"
Beats my three little handbooks He doesn't mention that at the wall he was starved for things to read- there was little point of having a library there, most of the men couldn't read. He would long for the Clayr's library while he'd read basic charter manuals and occasionally magazines passed to him with a chuckle from older men. At that moment he hardly cared if half the books in here would destroy him and his charter mark as soon as he opened them. Books! Real, genuine Books. Not magazines with grubby pictures of naked women and mysterious sticky patches gluing the pages together!

A small smile quivered on his face in appreciation of the boy's obvious enthusiasm. So many scorned the necessary study, preferring to leap straight into practical work, to master spells far beyond their comprehension. Such people did not last long. Hawk reached out to run a slender finger down the spine of one of the tomes.

"For the next few months, these books will consumate your existence." His voice echoed slightly off the rocky walls, adding an eerie quality to his speech. "The books on the shelves are yours to peruse at your will. You may choose what to read, and when you read it. However, I will require you to complete certain tasks for me. You will not know what these tasks are, or when they will be presented to you. All you know is that if you fail, you are no longer of use to me, and I do not have need for useless objects."

Hawk turned to gesture at a wooden cabinet tucked in a corner. The dark wood crawled with marks, like guard dogs prowling around precious gems. "The books in that cabinet are off-limits to inexperienced younglings like yourself. Make no mistake. If you attempt to obtain them now, you will die, whether it be at the hand of my protections, or at your own hand as you fail the spells written inside." Hawk wondered if the boy would pick up on the subtle challenge offered within.

Auralius looks at all the books around him, overwhelmed, delighted, letting it sink in for a moment that he can read any of these books to his hearts content. Tasks, ay?
He turns his gaze on the cabinet with curiousity (unfortunatly) untempered by fear, watching the foriegn magic swim on the surface and shuddering with slight, fascinated disgust at what might lurk behind them, like a boy somewhat revolted at the mysterious decayed animal corpse he's found; but unable to leave it alone, as if all the answers of life and death wear such an inelegant face.
"So that's it? I read some books-" he says this with a trace of ecstasy "and do some tests set by you, and I'm a necromancer?" he looks sceptical "It sounds like anyone could do it"

((Poor, innocent Auralius. I worry about him sometimes ::) :D))

((Eh, he might be right XD I haven't ever really taught Free Magic before, y'know, so I'm bluffing like there's no tomorrow))

Hawk was already moving away, unfastening his cloak to drape it over a chair. "Do not make judgements about what you do not understand, boy. I will not be asking you to simply walk down to the nearest town to fetch bread."

The art of instructing Fre Magic was considerably different to teaching Charter. The Charter mages had a preference for strict lesson plans, building up talent and skill like constructing a house, laying down the foundations and going from there. Free Magic, however, was wild. It thrived best with spontaneity and change. He would test Dogstar on what he wanted to boy to know at that particular moment. There would be some structure - regular sparring and forays into Death - and he would be sure to impart relevant knowledge while doing work. But a large amount of this learning would not be pre-planned.

"For example, I hope you can at least tell me the names of the nine bells," he continued.

((eh, make it up ^^ It doesn't have to be exactly right- I havn't read the books in a while and I wouldn't debate them anyway. I'm just happy to flesh out auralius's character a little more- I've only ever played him older, not as a kid))

Auralius laughs a little before he can stop himself. "I didn't even know necromancers ate bread, sir" he quips, and then pauses to think. "Well, saraneth, the binder, I know that one. And Ranna" he narrows his eyes "Which... puts people to sleep? Dyrim, Kibeth- which is the one you used on me before, isn't it? I've heard the clayr talk about how it sounds. There's one that starts with M, and the weeper... uh, they're named after the shiners, anyway. Are there two more?" he ducks his head to think, and furrows his brow "I thought the Abhorsen had only had seven..."

((I can't decide how educated he would be. He's just about the age where you start to forget nursery rhymes and things you learnt as a youth))

((*Cracks up* Omg nine bells wtf. Nine GATES, seven BELLS. I haven't read the book in so long, the shame.))

He sighed. This may take longer than anticipated. "Well, there is a fine place for you to start, though you at least managed to know the correct number. But that is not enough. The bells will be your greatest asset, and your mastery over them will determine your lifespan. The bells do not suffer to be wielded by fools, nor do the Dead respond to incorrect summonings." He closed his eyes, mind drifting back to the list that was imprinted on the mind of every necromancer and every Abhorsen. "Astarael, Saraneth, Mosrael, Dyrim, Kibeth, Belgaer, Ranna. I expect you to be able to tell me their purposes by tomorrow."

((lol, I was wondering if it was a test, or a mix up, or a reference to orranis and Yrael would follow ^^))

Auralius quickly but with difficultly stifled his protests and questions, and instead looks over at the bookshelves "Can I have something to write in and with, Sir?" he asks after a moment of scanning covers and titles, most of which sound fascinating but probably unhelpful for his simple, basic task. His stomach suddenly growls, reminding him that about now would be lunchtime for him. He resists the urge to get rations out of his pack, deciding that since he's not sure when food might be coming he should hold tight and save the food he does have for an emergency. "Astarael, Saraneth, Mosrael, Dyrim, Kibeth, Belgaer, Ranna." he mutters under his breath, feeling a little guilty for forgetting the names in the first place.

"I have no such materials," Hawk said, and walked over the the entrance to look thoughtfully out across the plain to where proper trees began to force their way through, and to where a coil of smoke drifted from the air, marking the nearest settlement. They would need supplies. Hawk himself had no particular need for them, but the boy would, and as he had not exactly been expecting to take on a young whelp, he was not stocked for it. "You'll find that Ganel over there in the distance has sufficient supplies. It will be our first stop."

Auralius nods wordlessly, questions answered, at least tempararily. He plays with his dog tags a little nervously. "I guess I'm a deserter, now" he mumbles. "And after I sat still for the tattoo and everything"

"A deserter?" He snorted softly. "It is not as if there was truly anything to desert from. Loyalty to those who had no respect for you. Obedience to a magic that is sub-par at best. Free Magic is what it says it is - free."

Hawk decided to leave off lecturing for the time being. The boy was struggling to cope with too many changes at once, and forcing it all on him might turn him away altogether. Perhaps the boy needed visual confirmaton.

"Come," he said. "We will retrieve the supplies from Ganel."

Auralius nods crisply, thoughts clearly turned inwards, unreadable on his face, which is as clear an calm as a glacier, and almost as cold. He walks silently with the necromancer, taking little interest in his surroundings.
Dispite his cool demenour, Auralius was quaking inside, expressionless only to keep his panic from overwhelming him and causing an asthma attack. The events of the day were catching up with him and his chest felt tight and sore. He stroked the hilt of his gladius wearily. I really wish I hadn't woken up this morning. I could have stayed in bed and ignored the drill captian shouting at me... I'll never have to see him again. Ha.

((weak post. I have a little birdy muttering in my ear o.O Opps. Turns out he can read the screen, too :o))

Ganel was a small-ish town, as battered and worn as so many others in these times. Lack of a working Charter stone left it more open than usual, and there was a dull resignation in many of the survivor's eyes. Many had simply given up, accepting that it was their fate to be dragged off in some dark night by prowling Dead, or as a sacrifice to a spell.

It was an advantageous position for Hawk. The town not only supplied him with a material supplies, but with a consistent stream of Life. It had taken a little time, and considerable patience, but the necromancer now had a town that was unknowingly bent to his will, beaten down and oppressed, and markedly lax in security.

Skinny orphans darted away to peer fearfully from dark corners as they strode down into the village, the few villagers out and about moving silently out of their way as though instinctively avoiding the dark aura Hawk emitted. When he reached the town square, he tilted his head, and then reached down to unclip a pouch from his belt. From the pouch he drew several golden coins, and held them out to Dogstar. "Take these, and get what supplies you need. Be back at this square before nightfall. I have business of my own to attend to."

((I have an evil plan, mwuhaha. Imagine if Auralius made friends with a townsperson...that later had to die.))

(((OooO, hehe ^^ Auralius does have a soft spot for pretty girls))

Auralius nodded quietly, still subdued, and headed away, obviously deciding goodbyes were unnecessary, but watching the direction the necromancer left in with mild interest. A little bit of spying, maybe, after he'd bought what he needed...
He found a bakery by the painfully familiar smell of fresh bread and stepped inside, rubbing his face a little wearily.
I'll buy flour, that way I can make my own bread and don't have to eat it stale- He happens to glance up, and gasps in surprise as his gaze falls on a lovely young girl in peasant's clothing, staring at him openly as the baker tries to give her her order of bread. The baker is staring too. It clearly takes a moment for auralius to realise why- Of course. I'm in my uniform.
"Hello" he says awkwardly, eyeing the girl "Heh, don't mind me. I'm just on holiday"
The girl smiles a little, blushing and looking away. She's around Auralius's age, maybe a little younger, with mousy brown hair caught in a braid and pale hazel eyes, made unremarkable by the plain clothing and grim expression of the town. But Auralius grins when he sees her smile, and takes the stack of rolls she's buying off the high counter for her.
"Let me buy some flour, and then I'll carry these back to your house for you" he says charmingly, icy blue eyes magnetic. Compared to the people around here, his white hair and blue eyes are quite exotic, and the girl clearly notices, nodding wordlessly. Auralius turns to the baker, opening his mouth to order, and frowns as the baker turns away with a sniff.
"I don't serve deserters" he says stiffly. Auralius pauses, thinking it over, and then deciding to be insulted. His cheeks redden and his charter mark lights a little. He starts to say some choice cuss words learnt on the wall, when the girl lays a soft hand on his arm.
"My father runs the mill, he'll sell you flour" she says shyly. Auralius's face transforms from anger to pleasure, and he turns around. "Well, it's decided then" he says cheerfully "His bread is mostly burnt anyway"
As he and the girl walk towards her house, he watches her pretty, tentative walk. A little bird he laughs to himself A lovely little wren.
"My name is Anne" the girl says quietly. Auralius grins, and slips his hand into hers boldly. She blushes but doesn't protest.
"I'm Auralius. I'm kinda new here. Maybe you could show me around a little, Wren?"
The girl blinks, wide eyed "Anne" she corrects.
"You're as lovely as a brush wren, that's what I'll call you" Auralius says charmingly. Anne laughs and chirps, waving her arms, and she and Auralius start to skip and flutter imaginary wings, laughing and enjoying themselves like children should.
They spend the afternoon together, Anne helping Auralius buy supplies, Auralius watching for signs of Hawk as he lugs his incresingly heavy pack and laughs with Anne. Some of his tension and worry is relieved. At least if he needs help, he has a friend in the town. If I had to run away from Hawk I doubt I could stay here more then one night, but that would give me time to buy supplies and perhaps convince Anne to come adventuring with me. It doesn't cross his mind that if he ran away even his survival training wouldn't be of much use if Hawk decided to find him, or that Anne probably wouldn't leave her family to come with him, and they'd all end up dead. Though mature, too much of Auralius still thought like the youth he was.

At sunset he laughingly parts with Anne, kissing her cheek and hands. I'll ask Hawk if I can come back here again. I'm sure he'll let me have a holiday once in a while.

"I'll see you again soon, Wren, I promise" he says brightly "I should get going, the... man I'm staying with won't wait for me" he snorts quietly to himself at that- Well, probably would wait, but almost certainly make me pay for keeping him waiting, "Good bye"
Anne smiles and dances away, and Auralius watches her, smiling, clearly quite taken with her. Then he turns and heads for the square where he's to meet Hawk, grinning to himself as he rubs his newly tanned skin. Frolicking around the small, frightened town all day had given him an even deeper tan.
